Training in Passivhaus techniques to bolster the pursuit of net-zero carbon emissions.
Scotland has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to sustainable construction with the launch of the Passivhaus in Practice program. This initiative, a part of the Scottish Construction Industry Recovery Plan, aims to train up to 500 construction sector professionals in Passivhaus standards.
The Passivhaus in Practice program is an extension of the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC), which has been instrumental in promoting green construction technologies. The program is supported by the Scottish Funding Council and is designed to help the construction sector lower its carbon footprint collectively.
Passivhaus is a world-renowned approach to designing and constructing highly energy-efficient buildings. Certified Passivhaus buildings can achieve a reduction of up to 75% in space heating requirements compared to typical new-build homes in the UK. These buildings offer better air quality, thermal comfort, and acoustics, benefits that extend to the communities using the spaces.
The program is not just about individual competencies. It aims to invest in meta-skills, such as digital technology, innovation, and the environment. This approach can be applied to a range of trades, making it a valuable asset for the construction industry as it strives to reach net-zero ambitions.
The training will cover the pillars of Passivhaus design, including thermal bridging, airtightness, and ventilation. It will be delivered through a mix of online, augmented reality (AR), and hands-on training modules to cater to various learning styles.
The program is particularly aimed at construction workers who may be out of work or facing the prospect of redundancy. This focus on skills and workforce aligns with the Scottish Construction Industry Recovery Plan.
The widespread adoption of Passivhaus standards could help create new jobs in construction supply chains. By investing in the upskilling of its workforce, Scotland is not only promoting environmentally friendly construction but also securing the future of its construction industry.

Investing in meta-skills and Passivhaus standards is a significant step towards Scotland's goal of becoming a world leader in green construction. By training its workforce in these areas, Scotland is ensuring a sustainable future for its construction industry while also contributing to the global fight against climate change.
